Spider-Man Costumes Through the Ages

Peter Parker’s classic red and blue costume is one of the most iconic superhero costumes of all time. It’s also an irresistibly funny sight, like Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man suits from Sam Raimi’s original trilogy.

The classic costume is Spider-Man’s starting outfit in all video games and more costumes can be unlocked later on. Sometimes the blue parts are drawn dark blue or black, like in Superior Spider-Man’s suit.
The Classic Costume

There have been a lot of Spider-Man costumes over the years. From the hero’s (controversial) original inception point, to rad ’90s incarnations, baggy TV suits, Venom, and his current suit worn by the Symbiote, Peter Parker’s outfit has gone a long way, but it has always careened in wildly different directions to fit each era.

Unlike other suits, which have been filled with fancy gadgets and armor, this version is stripped down to basics. It’s a design that is sure to stand out in the crowd, whether at a Halloween party or a convention. This version of the costume is probably closest to what Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions of the character would wear. It is also the suit that Tony Stark offered Peter in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The Second Version

A variation of the Classic Costume. This version is similar to the one worn by Peter Parker in the comics and movies.

This version has a red and blue color scheme with a large black spider on the back part of the costume. The gloves have a mix of red and blue on them, and the eye pieces are designed so that people who are not wearing the suit can’t see Spider Man’s eyes.

During the events of Superior Spider-Man, Otto Octavius created this suit. It looks like a more streamlined version of the Classic Costume, but it also features carbonadium plating on his neck and skull (to prevent unexpected body switching), talons on his fingers and feet, split-toed footwear fashioned as Jika-tabi shoes, and a different big spider on the back.
The Third Version

Insomniac has stuffed Spider-Man with plenty of suits to choose from, all of which hark back to various points in Spidey’s history. Some are more obvious than others, but there’s a good chance you’ll come across all of them throughout your time swinging through New York City.

In order to combat the Hobgoblin’s sonic attacks, Peter created a suit that warps light and sound around him. The design looked a bit like this, but with carbonadium lacing in the mask to prevent the mind-switch and a built-in communications device to activate nano-spider-tracers.

After Miguel O’Hara became Spider-Man on Earth-928, he wore a similar costume made from Unstable Molecule Fabric. The only difference was the addition of a “5” to the spider logo on the chest area.
The Fourth Version

After ditching the Symbiote Suit and fighting Randy Savage, Peter had to come up with a new costume. Luckily, his friend the Human Torch was on hand to lend him one from his own collection. It looks a lot like the classic suit with a gold spider emblem that symbolizes the fusion of fabric and nanotech.

On Earth-96211, a version of Peter Parker known as Miguel O’Hara protected New York City in a similar suit made from Unstable Molecule fabric (similar to the costumes of the Fantastic Four). This version featured more blue and a skull-like spider logo on the chest piece.

In the game, this suit is equipped with a Blur Projector that lets Spider-Man blur his surroundings to confuse his enemies. It also includes a powerful electric field that can stun villains for a limited time.
The Fifth Version

When Peter’s clone Ben Reilly joined the Future Foundation, he was given this modified version of the Fantastic Four uniform. The black costume could turn blue on the “blue frequency” to counteract symbiote effects.

During the 2015 Secret Wars event, the villain Dr. Doom created a reality called Battleworld where various permutations of Marvel heroes existed side by side. This Leinil Francis Yu-designed suit was worn by the surly Spider-Man of Earth-2099 during this time.

This hews closely to the standard design, but with more rubbery realism. It also makes an appearance in the 2018 Into the Spider-Verse video game. Each book in this series features a foreword by a contemporary young adult author and a detailed scholarly introduction speaking to the enduring significance of these iconic superheroes.Spider Man Costume
