The FDNY’s deputy chief, Stephen Moro, told reporters at the scene that the blaze was a labor-intensive one, and that the fire was not safe to investigate inside. He said that the cause of the blaze was unknown, but that the Fire Marshal would find out.

The FDNY reported that three firefighters were treated for minor injuries, but that none suffered life-threatening injuries. Two others were taken to the hospital, and one refused medical attention.

Firefighters used three hose lines to knock down the fire. The FDNY reports that the blaze was limited to a single-story brick building. There was heavy smoke and flames coming out of the roof, so firefighters climbed on to the roof to extinguish the fire.
